Malletti is a gourmet pizzeria based in Clerckenwell. They offer slices of delicious pizza, bowl of pasta or risotto, all for under a fiver! At Malletti, while the prices are attractive, the founder does not compromise on quality. On the contrary, the love of pizza, the freshness of its ingredients are at the heart of Malletti's philosophy!
We spoke to Antonio, his founder, who told us a bit more about his delicious place.
How did you come up with the idea of Malletti and tell us a bit more about yourself :-)?
Antonio: I came long time ago as chef in London and as a big city offering so much gastronomically I was annoyed that there was no one making a decent pizza, many of them were made at best with poor ingredients or at worst made with assembly of strange bits, namely corn pineapple, or chicken, all cooked in a very pedestrian manner ;-).
So as lover of good food I decided to go to Rome (they make the best pizza in the world, in my opinion) and I took a course and worked for a while there to refine and hone my skill. Back in London I sold my brasserie in south of London and I opened a small pizzeria in Soho, for wich my customers enjoyed for the best part of 18 years! We were catering from Monday to Friday lunch time only and it has been a success until the lease expired and the new one was far too expensive, currently I'm trading in Clerkenwell with my American partner and trade is good.
Tricky question, what is in your opinion the best pizza at Malletti?
Antonio: The best pizza for me? All!! They are all my creations and if they are good for me they are good for anyone! And I certainly avoid to molest my pizza with overloading of too many ingredients ;-)!
